PAINTIQUE: Painted Antique Furniture

PAINTER'S HONEYMOON by Lord Frederic Leighton (circa 1864).

PAINTIQUE   was begun in 2005 by John and Jacqueline. Longtime lovers of both antiques and painted furnture, they set out to furnish their first home together with, well—painted antique furniture.

Two things made this impossible: the most beautifully-painted antiques are sold at places like Sotheby's and Christie's for prices which range from thousands of dollars to millions—and all other painted antiques seem to have been painted white.

And so, unable to find (or afford!) the furniture they most admired and adored, they decided to create it.

John (an author) would scour the countryside for reasonably-priced, quality antiques with a "certain look," and perform any necessary repairs, learning as he went; Jacqueline (also a writer) explored her artistic side and made them beautiful.

When their home became too filled with beautiful furniture to walk from room to room without turning sideways, they realized they were addicted—not just to painted antiques, but to the whole adventure of finding old, tired, often broken pieces of latent beauty, nursing them gently back to health, and transforming them into works of art.

They also realized that the only way to support their furniture habit (and unclutter their home) was to begin selling some of their prized possessions.

And so Paintique was born...
