How do you know how old these pieces are?

The ages we cite are approximate, and based on several factors; the design or style of the piece, method of construction, and degree of aging are the most common indicators. Original hardware, when present, can also provide clues. Occasionally, there will be a label or other maker's mark telling us who made the piece—in which case it is sometimes possible to establish a narrower timeframe based on the date the company went out of business.

Very rarely, a piece will have a label bearing an actual date of manufacture or shipment. Even more rarely, we acquire a piece or set from the original owner, who purchased it when new and remembers the approximate year. Sometimes we get pieces from descendants of the original owner, who have a somewhat more fuzzy notion of when the pieces were first acquired.

Is the paint original?

Painting antique furniture is our specialty; unless otherwise noted, all of our pieces have been painted by hand in our private workshop.

What kind of paint do you use on your pieces?

We use only nontoxic water-based paints; we do not use oil-based or leaded paints, which can be harmful to children and pets (who sometimes gnaw on furniture!).

Where can I buy the colors you use?

We mix our own colors in small batches—whatever shades seem appropriate for the pieces we have on hand. Because of this, each batch is unique, and we'd be hard-pressed to duplicate it ourselves—part of the reason each piece we offer is absolutely unique.

How will my item be shipped?

We work with several professional shippers, who service various parts of the country. You can also arrange to have items picked up by the shipper of your choice. Most items can be delivered in the Los Angeles area (no shipper required), and personal pickups are always welcome.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept checks, money orders, cash, and payment via PayPal (which includes credit card payments).

Why are some items listed as "SOLD" when they first appear on the website?

Some of our pieces are purchased by clients before they're painted—which happens when the client stops by to see (or requests emailed photos of) our newly-arrived pieces. In response to numerous emails, we'll soon be adding an "arrivals" section to the site to ensure that everyone has a chance to see our new arrivals at the same time.
